A 31-year-old man was found dead at his residence in east Delhi’s Geeta Colony around 5 a.m. on Wednesday after allegedly being involved in a spat with his wife in the presence of their two sons. While the man’s wife claimed he shot himself dead, his family alleged he was murdered by his wife.

The deceased, Mohammad Haseen, was found in a pool of blood in his room on the second floor of their two-storey house in Aram Park. His father and two sisters had run up to see what had happened after they heard a gunshot.

Call from sister

“We had just had sehri as Ramzan is going on when I got a call from my sister. I rushed home to find him dead,” said Mohammad Kafil, Mr. Haseen’s elder brother. He added that Haseen was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The family told The Hindu that Mr. Haseen and his wife Saira had been having a troubled marriage for the last three-four months because of her alleged illicit relationship with a constable at Geeta Colony Police Station. “Last night, the two got into a fight because he wanted her to file a complaint against the constable for forcing her to maintain a relationship with him but she wasn’t willing. The two went to the police station late at night but Haseen was pushed out of there by the constable,” said Mr. Kafil, adding they have submitted a conversation between Ms. Saira and the constable on Facebook messenger to the police.

‘Fought all night’

According to the family, the two fought till late at night and then again in the morning before Sehri, a short while before the gunshot was heard. The police said that Saira told them that the two fought and even cut themselves in frustration. “Haseen later shot himself with a country-made pistol, she said,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Nupur Prasad told The Hindu .

When asked if Mr. Haseen was in possession of the weapon, the family said they are unaware of how the pistol came into the picture. “A case has been registered under Section 25/27 of the Arms Act because it was an illegal weapon and post-mortem will determine further action,” said Ms. Prasad.

Responding to the allegations made by the family against the wife and her alleged relationship with the police constable, Ms. Prasad said that the case will be investigated from all aspects and proceedings under Section 174, CrPC have been initiated. The police said that Mr. Haseen has a previous criminal record and was booked for attempt to murder and robbery a couple of years ago. The family said that he was acquitted in both the cases.
