Angry locals damaged three buses and a police vehicle after a 30-year-old man was crushed to death by a DTC bus in North-West Delhi’s Mahindra Park on Sunday afternoon. The driver absconded after the accident and was later arrested.
The deceased, Tilak Nagar resident Jaspreet Singh, was on the pillion seat of a two-wheeler that his friend Manav was driving. Around 1 p.m. when they were headed towards Tilak Nagar, a DTC bus hit their vehicle from behind. Eyewitnesses said that the bus was being driven at a high speed and the impact with which it hit the two-wheeler was so strong that Manav was thrown at a distance.
Jaspreet was first run over by the front wheel of the bus. An eyewitness said that the driver kept driving till the rear tyre also ran Jaspreet over. He then sped away and the duo was rushed to a hospital where Jaspreet was declared brought dead and Manav was discharged after treatment.
Locals vented out their anger by attacking some other DTC buses and a police jeep. Police were informed about the incident and they arrived at the scene to control the agitators. A police officer said that the erring driver Jasbir had applied brakes after covering some distance as he initially did not realise that he had crushed someone.
He was arrested when the police arrived and was booked for negligent driving at Mahindra Park police station.
