A 22-year-old man was allegedly caught red-handed while breaking into an ATM in Shahdara’s Farash Bazar to commit theft on Monday night, the police said on Tuesday.

The accused, Nazir alias Babu, had sprayed black liquid on the CCTV camera to make it dysfunctional, the police added.

Mr. Nazir, a resident of Durgapuri, was an electrician in Maharashtra before he started committing theft to earn easy money, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Nupur Prasad said.

The police said that they received a PCR call stating that someone has broken into the ATM of Punjab National Bank (PNB) in Vishwas Nagar.

“The police rushed to the spot and found that the shutter of the ATM was down. On entering, Mr. Nazir was caught cutting the ATM machine with a gas cutter and other tools,” said Ms. Prasad.

During interrogation, he allegedly told the police that he had committed thefts in the past but wore gloves and masks to hide his identity.

Items seized

The police claim to have seized a gas cutter, two gas cylinders and cutting tools from his possession.
