A 25-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly attempting to rape and murder his 25-year-old sister-in-law in north-west Delhi’s Bharat Nagar, the police said on Tuesday.

In a fit of rage

The accused, a native of Bihar and a labourer, attempted to kill her in a fit of rage after she complained to her husband against him.

“She told her husband that his brother had allegedly attempted to rape her. The husband, who is a driver, slapped his brother and asked him to leave the house,” said a senior police officer.

Pushed out of window

According to the police, the enraged brother-in-law attacked the woman with a knife on Sunday and pushed her out of the window from the second-floor house.

“The woman was alone at home when the brother-in-law stabbed her near the neck and pushed her out of the window. She held on to a cooler fitted near the window and shouted for help. Her cries alerted the neighbours, who gathered under the cooler on the ground floor. The crowd broke the woman’s fall after she lost grip on the cooler,” said the officer.

She was rushed to a nearby hospital and discharged after treatment.

The police have registered a case under Section 376 (punishment for rape), 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code against the brother-in-law.
