A 21-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly abducting and murdering his teenaged girlfriend in Khajoori Khas here this past month.

Alma, a resident of Khajoori Khas, lodged a complaint with the police on June 29 saying that her 17-year-old daughter had gone missing four days ago. Taking up investigation, the North-East Delhi Police team found that the girl was last seen riding pillion on a motorcycle with Mohammad Gulfam, a local boy. The statements of the victim's relatives and circumstantial evidence also pointed the needle of suspicion at Gulfam.

When questioned, Gulfam tried to mislead the police, but on sustained interrogation purportedly confessed to having abducted and murdered the girl.

He purportedly told the police that he was in relationship with the girl for over eight months and she had now been pressing him for marriage. But Gulfam did not want to marry her because of her social status.

Gulfam recently got engaged and when the girl came to know about it she allegedly threatened to tell his fiancé about their relationship. Fearing that she would expose him, he hatched a plan to eliminate her, the police said.

As per the plan, he took her to Ghaziabad on his motorcycle on the pretext of meeting his maternal aunt in connection with their marriage. He then took her to a sugarcane field and allegedly slit her throat with a knife. She died on the spot and he returned home.

The weapon of offence and the motorcycle used in the crime have been seized, the police said.
