Major fire in Sadar Bazar

June 10, 2012 10:55 am | Updated 10:55 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Two Delhi Fire Service personnel and three locals were injured while trying to douse a major fire that broke out in a residential building-cum-warehouse in Sadar Bazar here on Saturday.

The fire broke out around 4-30 a.m., following which the occupants escaped to their safety in time and alerted the Fire Department. Over a dozen fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the blaze that engulfed the first and second floor of the building.

“Two fire-fighters and three area residents suffered injuries when gas cylinders kept inside the building exploded. The injured were taken to the nearby Jayaprakash Narain Hospital. While the others were discharged after treatment, a fire-fighter who has sustained a deep cut in the back has been admitted to the hospital,” said a Fire official.

While the blaze was brought under control within few hours, the cooling operation continued till late on Saturday night. “We are taking all precautions to ensure that the fire does not spread further. It seems that incendiary articles like plastic waste materials had been stocked in the building, because of which it took some time for us to put out the fire completely,” said the official.

The police are trying to ascertain the exact cause of fire.
