An Indian Parliamentary delegation, led by Speaker of Lok Sabha Sumitra Mahajan, is participating in the meetings of 132nd Assembly of Inter Parliamentary Union.
While addressing the Assembly in Hanoi on the overall theme “Sustainable Development Goals: Turning words into action”, Ms. Mahajan expressed the view that the agenda of the Assembly is a unique opportunity for the international community to redouble its commitment for ending poverty and hunger and to set the world on the path to sustainable development.
She also expressed concern over the uneven achievement of Millennium Development Goals across different regions of the World.
While alluding to Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay’s philosophy of integral humanism, she urged the international community to aim for more equitable growth while addressing environmental issues. She underlined the fact that India had been providing assistance to partner countries for their economic and social development. In this context, she expressed the hope that developed countries would be more generous towards this cause. The Speaker reiterated India’s commitment to working with the international community to craft an ambitions, comprehensive and equitable development agenda with poverty eradication at its core.
She felt that development at the cost of our culture is not sustainable. She also urged the international community to evolve indigenous ways of achieving sustainable goals.
