March 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST - Dehradun:

Uttar Pradesh’s controversial politician and former MP D.P. Yadav, and three others — who were convicted in the Mahendra Singh Bhati murder case — were sentenced to life imprisonment by a special CBI court here on Tuesday.

In September 1992, Mahendra Singh Bhati, who was the MLA from Ghaziabad’s Dadri area, was gunned down at the Dadri railway crossing.

CBI, which took the case in 1993, submitted a charge sheet against eight persons in 1996. Of them, four died during the pendency of the case.

On February 28, CBI court held D.P. Yadav, Pal Singh, Karan Yadav, and Praneet Bhati guilty and convicted them under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 326 (causing grievous hurt) and 120B (criminal conspiracy). While Pal Singh, Karan Yadav, and Praneet Bhati were present in the court on February 28, D.P. Yadav could not appear before the court on medical grounds. On March 9 he surrendered before the court and was taken into judicial custody.
