A fast-track court here handed down life imprisonment to five men involved in the 2010 abduction and gang-rape of a 30-year-old BPO employee near Dhaula Kuan in Delhi.

This jail term was needed to “keep them away from society for as long as possible,” said the judge. The five abducted the victim and took turns to rape her. Describing the five as “beasts on the prowl to satisfy their lust,” Additional Sessions Judge Virender Bhat slapped a fine of Rs.50,000 on each of them.

Soon after the court pronounced the sentence, Shahid fainted in the courtroom. Usman kept sobbing all the while, as the other convicts stared blankly at the floor. The court was informed that soon after the incident, the victim had to quit her job at the BPO in Gurgaon, where she was earning a handsome salary, and shift to her native place in Mizoram, where she was making ends meet running a petty shop. “This amply indicates the impact of rape upon the victim,” Mr. Bhat said.
