Lieutenant-Governor urged to resolve Delhi’s situation

April 21, 2014 11:51 am | Updated May 21, 2016 12:36 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Holding out that the citizens were facing innumerable hardships in the absence of an elected government in Delhi, Rajya Sabha MP and former Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel on Sunday urged Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung to start convening meetings with the members of the public.

“I am going to meet the L-G personally and take up this cause. The situation has deteriorated on all fronts – be it power, water, education, public distribution system or public health. Who can an average Delhiite approach if he or she has some problem which is not being addressed by the administration? Right now people have nowhere to go and they are feeling harassed. ‘Janta durbars’ will provide an opportunity to average Delhiite to air their grievances at the top level and get them redressed,” said Mr. Goel.

He demanded that these public meetings be held at least twice a week and immediate action be taken by the L-G to redress the grievances of common people. This arrangement should continue till Delhi has an elected government.

Mr. Goel also questioned the lack of transparency in governance in Delhi at the moment. “There has been no indication so far from the Raj Niwas about the course of action in this regard. The people of Delhi also want to know how the taxpayers’ money is being spent by the L-G and his team when it comes to welfare schemes.”

The BJP leader said with the onset of summer, people have started facing power and water problems. “Today Delhiites are facing unscheduled power cuts in the name of maintenance by private discoms. They are also getting ready for another round of tariff hike. In addition with the onset of summer, there is a possibility that Delhi could face acute power shortage. There is also no effort to ensure adequate water supply to rural areas, jhuggi clusters and unauthorised colonies. The Delhi Jal Board and the Power Department of Delhi Government have failed to meet these challenges.”
