Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung has constituted a committee to ensure safety of the Northeast community residing in the city. The committee will identify concrete mechanisms to enhance the safety and security of the community.
The decision follows a spate of incidents in early February that have affected the community. These include the death of Nido Tania, a first-year student of a private university in Jalandhar, who died after being allegedly assaulted by a group of people in Lajpat Nagar and the rape of a 14-year-old Manipuri girl in Munirka.
The committee was constituted last Friday. It will be headed by Principal Secretary (Home) and have representatives from the Northeast community such as J. Maivio Woba, Binalekshmi Nepram, advocate Upamanyu Hazarika, a representative from the Northeast MPs Forum and Sanjoy Hazarika.
The other members of the committee include Joint Commissioner of Police (Security), District Magistrates (South West, North, South, and New Delhi), Deputy Commissioners of Police (North, South and South West) and a nominee from the Ministry for Development of Northeastern Region.
The committee will seek views of members from the Northeast community living in Delhi and put in place a system of regular interaction between the district administration, Delhi Police and members of organisations from the Northeast to discuss problem areas and to identify remedial measures. It will also recommend sensitisation measures that will ensure mutual respect and peaceful co-existence between all communities and groups staying in Delhi.
