Lawyers strike today

January 20, 2012 12:08 pm | Updated October 18, 2016 01:02 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

District court lawyers will abstain from appearing in courts on Friday. The coordination committee of all the District Court Bar Associations of Delhi have decided to observe a complete strike in view of the call given by the Bar Council of India. They are protesting against the Legal Practitioners Bill, 2010, and the Higher Education and Research Bill, 2011.

The Council claims that the Government intends to take over the powers of the Bar Council by establishing an ombudsman consisting of judges to hear complaints against lawyers and taking over the authority of the Bar Council over legal education.
