From highlighting women’s struggles to narrating their varied journey of empowerment — the journalists honoured at the seventh edition of the Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity on Thursday brought out a plethora of perspectives on gender issues through their work.
As many as 51 journalists received awards at a ceremony organised by Population First and the United Nations Fund for Population Activities here. The works of awardees ranged over diverse issues, including problems faced by school girls in villages, sexual harassment faced by female defence personnel, the struggles of war widows and so on.
The Laadli Lifetime Achievement Award was conferred on Nirupama Borgohain, one of the most prolific writers in Assam. Her most famous work is a short story titled, “Jai Parajay”.
Special awards were given to 10 people, including Natasha Badhwar, who received the award for her article “ >Leading From Within ”, which was published in The Hindu ’s weekend edition, The Sunday Magazine .
The winners from the Eastern region included Assam’s Joy Kanta Sarma for his column on comparisons within women empowerment and Mamata Mishra of Assam Tribune for her report on the practice of witch-hunting in the region. The awardees from Odisha were Rukmini Panda and Sarmila Sahoo, while Anwesha Banerjee was the winner from Bengal.
From the northern region, Poulomi Banerjee from Hindustan Times , Pritha Chatterjee and Amrita Nandy from Indian Express , Ajay Sura from Times of India and Jo Chopra from Livemint were the other awardees.
