June 19, 2016 12:00 am | Updated October 18, 2016 01:01 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College has been allowed to start counselling but not the admission process till Monday, when the Delhi High Court will hear a petition filed by some teachers challenging the order of the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions granting minority status to the college.

The teachers have challenged the grant of minority status to the college on the grounds that it will affect the interests of SC/ST students. The college was granted the status of a “minority educational institution” in 2011.

The order was challenged by Delhi University and some teachers by way of separate petitions before the Court. A stay was granted in 2012 on the petition filed by the varsity. In July 2015, DU withdrew its petition. But, the teachers stood their ground.

While the college has assured that the system of reservation for SC/ST will continue and that reservation for OBC is not essential, the teachers want the old system in place.
