Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has sought an extension to stay at his Tilak Lane residence till his daughter’s examinations get over in May.

The Public Works Department had sent a letter to him, asking him to vacate the house immediately as he had already crossed the 15-day deadline a Minister gets to stay at the official residence after demitting office.

After 15 days, Ministers can stay at the official residence for a maximum of six months, but are required to pay rent much higher than the market rates. In this case, Mr. Kejriwal may have to pay 65 times the rent — Rs.2.58 lakh per month.

The Aam Aadmi Party leader, who had resigned as Chief Minister on February 14, should have vacated the flat by March 1. The PWD sent the letter to him after the Urban Development Ministry sent a notice asking the Delhi Government to return the flat.

The PWD had not issued a notice to Mr. Kejriwal till March 8 probably fearing that if the same government comes to power it may create trouble for the officials concerned.
