The pavement dweller who was killed on the spot after a Class XII student allegedly ran over four people near north Delhi’s Kashmere Gate during the early hours on Thursday remains unidentified even as one of the three injured in the incident was put on a ventilator on Friday.

The three injured were identified as Asif, Sanjay and Karan alias Kuldeep.

The police said that Asif, whose jaw has been broken, has been put on a ventilator.

“His condition is very critical. He may or may not survive,” a senior police official told The Hindu , adding that Sanjay is still undergoing treatment but is out of danger. Karan was discharged on Thursday.

The deceased, thought to be in his 40s, remains unidentified. Explaining the reason, the official said: “It’s difficult to identify these people as they rarely ever know who is sleeping next to them.”

Karan told the police that he doesn’t usually sleep on the pavement but is a resident of north Delhi and works as waiter in marriages on contract basis.

“It was only by chance that he was sleeping on the day of accident, which is why he didn’t know the others. Sanjay said that he has been on the pavement for many years, but he didn’t know the man who passed away. Meanwhile, Asif is still not in any condition to talk,” said the official.

The police are showing the picture of the deceased to other pavement dwellers and will be giving it to newspapers for publishing.

Board exam

Meanwhile, the 18-year-old accused is in Tihar jail and it is uncertain whether he’ll be able to take his exam on April 29. “He has his board exam next week. The family is trying to figure out how he can take the exam,” said a member close to the family.

The family has said that the teenager suffers from epilepsy and takes medicine for the condition.
