Accused Vinay Kumar and Lilu Pal were arrested on Wednesday night.

A week after an incident, involving a daylight robbery and a culpable homicide was reported at the house of a senior citizen in Karol Bagh, the Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested two of the five accused in the case.

The two arrested accused have been identified as Vinay Kumar and Lilu Pal. A countrymade pistol and two live cartridges have been seized from their possession.

Five robbers

The police said five men barged into the house of Avinash Chander Bhalla in Karol Bagh’s Ajmal Khan Park on May 30 morning. They tied Mr. Bhalla and his domestic help Hari with clothes and tapes before ransacking the house. His wife and daughter were not at home at the time of the incident.

Another domestic help, who was present in the house at that time, tried to raise an alarm before locking herself up inside the bathroom. She later jumped through the window of the bathroom possibly out of fear or in an attempt to seek help from neighbours.

“When the police reached the spot, they found that the entire house was ransacked. They spotted a woman [the domestic help] lying on the floor in a pool of blood. She was rushed to the hospital but the doctors declared her brought dead,” said a senior police officer.

The robbers had fled the spot after looting valuables, including jewellery, a mobile phone, one i-pod and ₹12,000 in cash. Mr. Bhalla and the domestic helps were beaten up during the robbery. They were held hostages at gunpoint. The police registered a case of robbery and culpable homicide at Desh Bandhu Gupta Road police station.

With the help of local intelligence, the investigating team zeroed in on accused Kumar and Pal. Their movements were tracked and they were finally arrested on Wednesday night.

Kumar is a resident of Shahdara in north-east Delhi and Pal hails from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh. They revealed that they had committed the robbery as they were in need of money. They also said that they were helped by a few other accomplices in executing the plan.

“Lal Bahadur told Kumar that his friend Raju, who worked in a big bungalow had informed him that in the second portion of the bungalow, an elderly couple were residing alone and that they had a lot of cash and jewellery that they had kept in the house. They hatched a conspiracy to rob the couple and also involved Raju in their plan. They later involved Pal, a water supplier in the area and some other persons in the conspiracy,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Mandeep Singh Randhawa.

The police are now investigating further into the matter to arrest the other accused involved in the case.
