JNU students continue agitation

January 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 09:39 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The stand-off between the Jawaharlal Nehru University administration and the students’ union entered its ninth day on Thursday, with the students continuing their hunger strike demanding better and more hostel facilities. The students have been camping outside the administration building day and night.

“We expect the hunger strike to end soon. We have been talking to the students. For every issue they have raised we have answered them in detail. They have asked for building of more hostels, and we have been trying to get clearances. We have explained everything and appealed to them to end their fast. We will be talking more to them,” said Vice-Chancellor S.K. Sopory.

This is not the first time that the JNUSU has been sitting on a hunger strike for hostel facilities. “This time we intend to sit on the strike till it is resolved. There have been around 30 people on a relay strike. The administration acts helpless and makes some new excuse that they need DDA clearances, MCD clearances. We have demanded that they provide alternate accommodation to those students who are being denied hostel facilities,” said JNUSU president Ashutosh Kumar.
