The Ghaziabad police on Sunday arrested Jet Airways vice-president (security) Col. (retd.) Avneet Singh Bedi on charges of land grabbing in a prime location in Sahibabad.

Ghaziabad Superintendent of Police Akash Tomar said Mr. Bedi was arrested for allegedly acquiring municipal corporation land illegally.

Corporate security

“His profile on the Jet Airways website claims that Mr. Bedi has several years of experience in corporate security. He joined the airlines in 2015 after serving as senior V-P in Walmart India Ltd. At Jet Airways, he was responsible for establishment and implementation of best in class security standards. He was arrested from his residence in Panchsheel Park in New Delhi on Saturday,” Mr. Tomar said.

An FIR into the matter was lodged on June 21, 2017, under Sections 447 (Punishment for criminal trespass) and 448 (Punishment for house-trespass) of the IPC.

The complaint was filed by Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam’s (GNN) Joint Commissioner A. K. Gupt. The FIR was lodged against 11 persons, including Mr. Bedi.

The Nigam conducted an inspection in Sahibabad on May 30 and found massive encroachment on its land.

‘Land sharks’

This land was found to be allegedly encroached by 11 persons identified as Sunil Kumar, Subhash, Anaar Singh, Shahnawaz, Khemchandra, Jay Raj, Vimla Bedi, Manohar Bedi, Avneet Singh Bedi, Digvijay Singh and Guneet Singh.

Ghaziabad Mayor Ashu Verma said 172 FIRs had been lodged against land sharks for encroachment in Ghaziabad so far. The land sharks are being identified and soon more persons will face consequences for encroaching on government land, he added.

Mr. Gupt said seven teams have been constituted to identify and deal with encroachment in the city: “We are taking up the drive against land sharks phase-wise”.

Nigam officials said there was massive encroachment in Kaushambi, Indirapuram, Vaishali, Vasundhara, Loni, Apsara border, Govindpuram, Lal Kuan and Sahibabad.
