Commuters struggled to reach their offices in time on Monday as heavy rain brought traffic to a standstill on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway.
In a grim reminder of the monster jam on July 28 last year, waterlogging at several points on the expressway resulted in long snarls. It took motorists more than an hour to travel just a few hundred metres at the Hero Honda Chowk, which had been the focal point of the massive jam last year too.
“I was on my way to Manesar from Sector 31 when I was caught in the jam near Hero Honda Chowk. It took me more than two hours to travel a distance of around 20 km to my office,” said Rajesh Kumar.
The city had witnessed a similar situation on Friday when heavy rain overnight led to waterlogging at several areas and virtually brought the traffic to a halt on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway.
Residents took to Twitter to vent their ire on repeated instances of traffic jams in the city after a spell of rain. “Heavy traffic jam in Gurgaon due to rains that happened 4 hours back. Usual areas getting effected. Nothing changed [sic],” a commuter tweeted.
Expressing anger over the failure of the administration to fix the issue, a resident tweeted: “Gurgaon is in news for bad reason, traffic jam after rain what is GMC [Gurugram Municipal Corporation] doing? Huge Jam at Hero Honda Chowk [sic].”
Ongoing construction
The ongoing construction of flyovers and underpasses at the four major intersections on the expressway: IFFCO Chowk, Signature Tower, Rajiv Chowk and Hero Honda Chowk, has added to the chaos. The situation is likely to improve after the flyover on Hero Honda Chowk is completed.
The traffic situation on the expressway returned to normal around noon.
Besides the expressway, areas such as Sector 15, Sector 31, Sector 30, Sector 46, Sector 47 and Palam Vihar also witnessed waterlogging.
