The Indian Women’s Press Corps has expressed concern over rising crimes against women and urged political parties and their representatives to show more sensitivity towards such issues.

In a statement issued on Friday, the IWPC expressed its deep concern at the unabated increase in crimes against women and young children. “Following the horrific hanging of the two minor girls in Badaun district, Uttar Pradesh, there have been several other instances of rape and gang-rape reported from other parts of the country,” it noted.

“Take up issue seriously”

Urging political parties to take the matter up seriously and to ensure implementation of the Verma Commission recommendations, the IWPC also noted with concern the statements made by leaders of some political parties which belittle the gravity of the crime.

“Statements like “boys will be boys” or that “rape is a social crime which depends on the man and the woman”, “it is sometimes right and sometimes wrong”, and that “it is not possible for any government to ensure that rape is not committed” are not acceptable and we urge the political class to be more accountable and conduct themselves more responsibly and sensitively in matters dealing with crimes against women,” it said.
