The Capital is experiencing a “water emergency”, Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh said while leading a protest by his partymen outside the Delhi Jal Board office on Tuesday.

Mr. Singh said the suffering of Delhiites had doubled because of the harsh weather and lack of planning by the Jal Board as well as the Power Department. State Congress leaders including Mr. Singh, Kiran Walia, Jagdish Tytler and Mahabal Mishra and other party workers staged a dharna against what they called mismanagement.

“The Power Department is saying there are no power cuts and the water utility department is blaming the Power Department for lack of power supply. In all of this, Delhi is in a mess,” said the DPCC president.

Mr. Singh added that the water crisis had become particularly acute this summer. “Earlier, the problem was limited to South Delhi, but now people in East, North-West and North Delhi are also suffering. Basically, everybody in Delhi is facing the problem,” he said.

The Congress leaders insisted their agitation had no political colour. “We don’t even know when the elections are and we are here protesting. That is the difference between the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party,” said Mr. Singh.

Prof. Walia said people were still coming to the Congress leaders with their problems. “We have been woken up in the middle of the night by people complaining about the power and water situation even though their MLAs are of other parties,” she said.

Reiterating his party’s stance, Mr. Singh said: “We will be on the roads till the people of Delhi get relief”.
