IPS officer remanded in judicial custody; bail hearing on Monday

July 31, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:26 am IST - CUTTACK:

Arrested senior IPS officer Joydeep Nayak was again remanded in judicial custody after his three-day police remand ended on Saturday.

Although, the police had sought a further two-day remand of the Tripura cadre officer, a Vigilance (Special) court here sent him to Choudwar circle jail, posting the police remand plea to Monday for hearing.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the 1991-batch officer, who was arrested last week for his alleged key role in a corruption case, has again approached the Orissa High Court for regular bail.

The High Court had earlier this month refused to grant him anticipatory bail and subsequently following his arrest, the Cuttack Vigilance Court Judge R. C. Hota had turned down his bail plea.

The I-G rank officer during an inter-cadre deputation in Odisha had allegedly embezzled Rs 88 lakh that was meant for computer education of SC and ST students, when he was officiating as the I-G of Human Rights Protection Cell (HRPC) earlier this year.

Although, five others, including a senior OPS officer, were arrested in this connection, Joydeep had gone underground. While on the run, Joydeep had reportedly came under the scalpel for a ligament surgery in a New Delhi hospital and subsequently, the Tripura government placed him under suspension for unauthorised absence. He was arrested while taking cover inside a godown in Ghaziabad of Uttar Pradesh by a special team of Odisha police on July 23.
