A severely injured peacock from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was recently rescued by the Wildlife SOS.
The bird was traumatised and is currently undergoing treatment. It will be released back into its natural habitat once deemed fit.
A call on the Wildlife SOS 24-hr rescue helpline (9871963535) alerted the organisation’s rapid response unit to the presence of an injured peacock on the JNU campus. The bird was reportedly attacked by dogs and had sustained bite injuries on its back and legs. Seeing that it was in need of immediate medical attention, the security officials contacted Wildlife SOS for help.
A two-member team was promptly dispatched to the location and the distraught peacock was brought in for veterinary treatment.
Mohan Kumar, security official said, “We found the bird lying outside the computer science building and on seeing that it was hurt, decided to call Wildlife SOS on their helpline number. In the meantime, we brought it to the guard room where we gave it plenty of water to drink and made sure it got some rest.”
Kartick Satyanarayan, co-founder of Wildlife SOS, said “The peacock is currently at the Wildlife SOS rescue facility where our veterinarians are looking into its treatment. The peacock (Pavo cristatus) is protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Wildlife SOS works round the clock within the Delhi-NCR region to rescue distressed urban wildlife, such as this peacock.”
