Infant drowns as boat capsizes

A nine-month-old baby drowned and two persons went missing when the boat they were in capsized in the Chimen river in Assam’s Dhemaji district on Monday.

Dhemaji Superintendent of Police Swapnaneel Deka said more than 12 persons were travelling in the boat at the time of the incident, which took place around 10.30 a.m. at Ananda Nagar, located about 70 km from Dhemaji town.

Investigations on

The infant drowned while the mother was rescued, Mr. Deka said, adding that the infant’s body was recovered later. Nine persons managed to swim to safety or were rescued by the locals or the State Disaster Response Force.

Search for the two missing persons is on, he said, adding that investigations into the incident are underway. — PTI
