This year, Delhi has seen countless protests by schoolkids demanding clean air.

People underestimate the damage that air pollution can cause, warned Professor Raj Kumar, director (acting), Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute (VPCI), at public lecture on ‘Effect of Air Pollution on Lungs’ here on Friday.

The lecture series is aimed at educating people about the adverse effects of pollution and highlighted how both outdoor and indoor pollution is harmful.

“The body doesn’t understand outdoor and indoor it merely reacts to adverse air quality,” said Dr. Kumar.

Dangerous trend

“What is worrying doctors is that research now shows that pollution affects even unborn children. This is a dangerous trend and one that need to be spoken about,” he said, adding that indoor pollution is equally damaging.

“Homes in rural areas have indoor air being contaminated due to wood burning. Urban homes are polluted by dust-mites, pollen etc,” said Dr. Kumar.

Also present at the lecture were Prof. B. K. Menon from VPCI and Prof. Anant Mohan, AIIMS.
