A 45-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly stealing an Indonesian national’s bag in Chanakyapuri here in February, the police said.
Meets senior officers
The incident was reported on February 19, when the victim was on the way to the Embassy of Indonesia in Chanakyapuri from New Delhi railway station. The victim had met senior Delhi Police officers on Monday, following which the accused was arrested within 16 hours.
On the way to the Embassy, Azam Kamal Sheikh stopped to make some photocopies. When he returned, he could not find the autorickshaw at the designated spot. The victim, who belongs to Bihar, has been working as a chef in Indonesia since the past 10 years.
Mr. Sheikh told the police that the autorickshaw driver had fled with his bag containing $3,881, 5.76 lakh Indonesian rupiah and 26 Malaysian Ringgit (approximately ₹5.6 lakh) and a mobile phone.
“He had come to India for his daughter’s wedding and was carrying the money in a bag,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Madhur Verma.
He said the Special Staff was asked to investigate the case and CCTV footage of the spot was examined.
“An informer identified the accused as Imtiaz Mia, an autorickshaw driver. The suspect was picked up for questioning after his autorickshaw was identified. He confessed to stealing Mr. Sheikh’s bag,” Mr. Verma said.
The accused allegedly told the police during interrogation that he had conned an Army officer of ₹40,000. The police are investigating to ascertain his role in similar crimes.
Modus operandi
“His modus operandi was to ferry passengers in the city, especially Non-Resident Indians [NRIs] or foreigners, and then steal their belongings,” said Mr. Verma.
