A court here has asked the Central Government to extradite an Indian national to Australia to stand trial for allegedly raping a girl two years back in Victoria.
Jaswinder Singh Mutta, the accused, said he had no objection to being extradited, following which Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Amit Bansal said: “I hereby recommend to the Union of India the extradition of the fugitive criminal Jaswinder Singh Mutta to the requesting State, Australia.”
Mutta surrendered in January this year at Moga in Punjab after a warrant was issued against him by the court. The Australian High Commission had written to the Ministry of External Affairs on August 10, 2011, seeking Mutta's extradition.
Following this, the Government moved the court through its counsel Naveen Kumar Matta.
The Australian High Commission had stated that Mutta has been charged with the offence of rape which is punishable with imprisonment up to 25 years in that country.
