How does the Sotiganj market function?

There are more than 350 contractors or middlemen active in Sotiganj who purchase stolen cars from various States and bring it to the market. Thieves get in touch with these contractors who talk to Sotiganj godown owners. All the parties involved, then, arrive at a number.

For example, for an SUV worth ₹20 lakh, the thief gets between ₹60,000 and ₹80,000. The car will be bought by a contractor, who will strike a deal with a dealer in Sotiganj for ₹1 lakh to ₹1.5 lakh.

The car will then be taken to a godown as instructed by the contractor, where a group of automobile mechanics will strip the vehicle within 20 minutes. All the body parts are shipped to various shops and all that remains at the godown is the body.
