Home Guards withdrawn from buses

Volunteers will be deployed with the Delhi Police for polls

Around 2,000 Home Guard volunteers deployed as marshals in DTC buses to prevent crimes against women have been withdrawn. The decision was approved by Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal in order to attach the volunteers with the Delhi Police in view of the civic polls to be held on April 22.

Civil Defence volunteers, however, will continue to be deployed in Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses.

A top official in the Directorate General of Home Guards said: “Around 2,000 volunteers have been withdrawn and deployed with the Delhi Police by order of the L-G. The withdrawal has been made due to civic bodies elections. They will be sent back to DTC buses afterwards”.

In January, the AAP government had come out with a list of 2,980 marshals, comprising Home Guard and Civil Defence volunteers, deployed in DTC buses. This was done to refute charges made by the BJP that there was not enough security in public buses.

Deployment of the Home Guard in DTC buses was one of the pre-poll promises made by the AAP.
