Family and friends on Sunday staged a protest against alleged police inaction following the death of 20-year-old Ghulfam Ali, one of the four victims injured by a speeding BMW on Saturday.

Ghulfam died during treatment at the Capital’s Safdarjung Hospital late on Saturday night while suspect Vinod is yet to be arrested. In the ensuing protests, dozens of demonstrators blocked traffic with Ghulfam’s body on the road near Noida 12-22 Chowk post-noon and camped for several hours demanding swift action and raising slogans against Noida Police.

Scores of people took to the streets in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida city today to vent their ire over Ghulfam's death. “My brother died of no fault of his own. He died because an errant driver indulged in a race on a busy road. All we want is justice. The police should arrest the perpetrators whose name and address is known to them. Why the delay,” said Ghulfam’s brother Nawaz.

“It has been more than 24 hours and the police are not doing anything. We want justice,” said Ghulfam’s father, Waheed.

His mother blamed the police for her son’s death claiming his life could have been saved had he been taken to hospital on time.

Several police officers, too, reached the spot to convince the protesters to clear the roads.

However, by late afternoon, they cleared the road and removed the body. Asked if any assurance was given by the police, Nawaz said that wasn’t the case but they had to perform Ghulfam’s last rites. The body was later taken to Ghulfam’s ancestral town of Moradabad, where he is likely to be buried later on Sunday or Monday morning.

He died because an errant driver indulged in a race on a busy road. All we want is justice, said Ghulfam’s brother
