Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Sunday said hosting the Commonwealth Games was “a boon for the Capital” and urged the people to render “constructive contribution” to help make the Games, which will leave a “permanent legacy” for the city, a grand success.
Addressing State-level Independence Day celebrations at Ambedkar Stadium here, Ms. Dikshit hoped the 61 players from Delhi, who would be competing in the Games would bring laurels to the city with their performance.
She said Delhi was on its way to “becoming a world-class city” as a result of “unprecedented infrastructural development” because of the Games and said the work would be completed smoothly.
Talking about infrastructure developments, Ms. Dikshit said the first-ever elevated road from the Games Village and a ring road bypass were ready to be commissioned.
She appreciated the big achievement of expansion of Delhi Metro within the city and its extension to Gurgaon and Noida. She said a state-of-the-art metro line connecting the city and international airport would also open soon. She said all old DTC buses would be replaced with new low-floor CNG propelled AC and non-AC buses.
In an attempt to make Delhi a “hunger-free city,” she said, more centres would be added to the eight ‘Jan Aahar Kendras' that provide “nutritious cooked food” to the poor twice a day. ‘Aap ki Rasoi' centres that provide a full meal “free of cost” to destitute persons once a day were also mentioned.
She talked about benefits of “one rupee per unit subsidy on limited consumption of power in a month” for a large number of low-end consumers.
Ms. Dikshit said the combined capacity of power generation plants at Bawana (which would soon begin operation), Rithala and Jhajjar in Haryana, would make Delhi a “power-surplus State.”
