A Delhi Police Head Constable was arrested on Friday for allegedly accepting bribe from a shopkeeper in exchange for giving him a clean chit in connection with a complaint.

The shopkeeper’s mother had filed a complaint against her son alleging that he was using a fake passport.

Amount negotiated

The shopkeeper, a resident of Mehrauli, approached the Vigilance Department stating that Head Constable Asgar Ali had demanded ₹1 lakh in exchange for giving him a clean chit in the case. After negotiations, Mr. Ali agreed to accept for ₹25,000.

The complainant bought the first instalment of ₹6,000 to the Public Grievance Cell of the south district, where accused was posted, on Friday.

“Mr. Ali accepted the bribe. Following a signal by the witness, a Vigilance team caught him red-handed and recovered the money,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Vigilance) R.K. Jha.

A senior police officer said the shopkeeper and his mother have been at loggerheads for a while. He is her son from the first marriage.
