The 32-year-old Delhi Police constable who allegedly shot himself on Thursday evening succumbed to injuries around midnight the same day. Parvinder’s family, including his wife Sunita, claimed he was upset over the past month but refused to share the reason why.

Parvinder, who was posted on sentry duty at the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) near Gurdwara Bangla Saheb, allegedly went to the toilet around 6.30 p.m. and shot himself in the right temple, said the police.

According to colleagues, the constable had seemed troubled since Thursday morning.

His post-mortem was conducted at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on Friday morning and the body handed over to the family around 1 p.m. “The body was taken to his village Charkhi Dadri in Haryana for last rites,” said a senior officer.

Were aware of distress

His family was aware of his distress but didn’t expect him to end his life.

“He had become very quiet and stopped eating properly over the past month. We asked him many times what was bothering him but he refused to tell us anything,” said his brother-in-law Vijay Kumar, a resident of Janakpuri.

He said Parvinder had received a call from his mother Suman on Thursday morning.

“He was angry about something when he left his village around 5 a.m. His mother called him around 10.30 a.m. to ask if he had reached safely. She called once again in the afternoon to check whether he was okay,” Mr. Kumar said.

“When his mother called the next time, the phone was switched off. She assumed the battery had drained,” said Mr. Kumar.

Stating that there was no problem in the family over money or among the members, Mr. Kumar added, “We still can’t understand what was troubling him.”

The police have initiated inquest proceedings and seized Parvinder’s mobile phone to check the call records to establish the reason.
