Deepu Dubey, a migrant labourer from Bihar who had come to Delhi nearly three years ago, lost his life on Saturday after he jumped into a water harvesting tank to help Anil and Balvinder, who had lost consciousness after inhaling poisonous fumes inside.
His brother, Bum Bhola Dubey (36), a daily wage labourer himself and a resident of Rain Basera in Ambedkar Colony, stood outside Fortis Hospital waiting to collect his body.
‘Look what happened’
“I had told him not to go for this job, but he said ‘what’s the harm in earning ₹500’.”
According to Mr. Dubey, Deepu had been working at marriage halls and tents as a cleaner.
He had never cleaned a water tank or sewer. “It was his first time. Look what happened,” the brother cried.
Recent acquaintance
He said that he had met Swarn Singh, who also died in the incident, on Friday night after Anil introduced them.
“Mr. Singh knew Anil and had told him that he needed people for the job. That’s when Anil roped in Deepu,” he said.
About their last conversation, the brother said the two had had breakfast together. Mr. Dubey claimed that he had asked Deepu not to go. “He said he would be back in two hours,” he said.
