The Delhi High Court on Wednesday allowed the Delhi Transport Corporation to procure 393 low-floor air-conditioned or ordinary buses from heavy vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland.
These buses are part the fleet of 1,093 buses which the DTC had agreed to purchase to meet the shortfall following removal 1,600 Blueline buses from the city roads.
A Division Bench of the Court comprising A. K. Sikri and Justice Reva Khetrapal vacated the stay when counsel for the vehicle manufacturer told the Court that in case of any untoward happening due to any defect in these buses the company would compensate the DTC.
The company also informed the Court that it had furnished an indemnity bond to the Corporation for bearing the losses, if any, due to defects in these buses.
The Court had earlier restrained the DTC from procuring these buses following filing of an application by an advocate complaining that the buses supplied by Ashok Leyland were wanting on safety count.
The stay on the procurement of these buses close on the heels of removal of Blueline buses from the city roads had commuters in deep trouble.
The vacation came on an application by the Corporation. The DTC had sought vacation citing the difficulties being faced by commuters.
