HC forms committee for better Anganwadi centres

December 08, 2010 07:37 pm | Updated 07:37 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday formed a three-member high-power committee to suggest ways to improve conditions at Anganwadi centres in the Capital.

These centres have been set up by the Delhi Government under the Integrated Child Development Programme launched by the Centre in 1975 to fight hunger and malnutrition among children up to six years.

The committee will be headed by the Delhi Chief Secretary.

A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Manmohan passed the direction while hearing a 17-year-old old petition filed by non-government organisation Akhil Bharatiya Vidya Parishad making a plea for directions to the Centre and the Delhi Government to improve infrastructure and hygiene conditions at these centres.

Observing that Aaganwadi centres must have a better infrastructure and hygienic conditions, the Bench asked the committee to review the functioning of these centres and submit a report within two months.

The Bench passed the order after perusing a status report on the functioning of these centre filed by a committee appointed by the Court earlier. The report said that the hygienic conditions at these centres were utterly bad and the infrastructure required a lot of improvement.
