An incomplete Hauz Khas parking lot, which was inaugurated on Monday without safety clearance and currently being used by commuters, found a mention in the house meeting of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation on Tuesday.

The three-storey underground parking lot has been constructed under a park at Block E in Hauz Khas.

Former Mayor and the possible BJP candidate from Malviya Nagar constituency Arti Mehra inaugurated the incomplete Hauz Khas parking lot on Monday.

The residents welfare association of Block A, B, C, D, and E (South) Hauz Khas have alleged that the parking lot was yet to get the structural stability certificate, completion certificate from the civic body and no-objection certificate from Fire Department, Traffic Police and Delhi Police.

SDMC officials confirmed that the parking lot, which has been built at a cost of Rs. 31 crore and can accommodate more than 360 cars, was yet to get the structural safety certificate and the fire safety clearance. They also said that in two to three days the parking lot will get all the required clearances.

The civic body officials highlighted that the parking facility was being used by vehicle owners without payment of any charges. They said the tenders to run the parking facility will soon be floated.

The residents and shopkeepers of Hauz Khas area protested against the “stubborn” attitude of Ms. Mehra and her insistence to inaugurate the incomplete underground parking facility.

“How can Ms. Mehra inaugurate the government project while she is no more an elected representative neither at the level of corporation, assembly, or Parliamentary constituency? Her action sets a very bad precedent,” said a representative from the resident welfare association.

While raising the issue in the House, the BJP councillor from the area, Ankita Saini said only one of the three floors of the underground parking lot was ready.
