The Municipal Corporation of Delhi will convert an electric crematorium in Green Park Extension area in the city into a CNG-based unit soon.
The civic body has invited Expressions of Interest from private firms for installation or conversion, operation and maintenance of two electric furnaces in the crematorium in south Delhi into Compressed Natural Gas-based furnaces.
The agency which will get the contract will also undertake the related civil works, officials said.
The works related to CNG supply and laying of pipeline upto nearby sub-station will be taken up by the Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), they said.
“The MCD proposes to shortlist competent firms. The interested firms should have adequate technical and financial base and experience of having successfully completed similar projects,” they added.
MCD Municipal Health Officer N. K. Yadav said the civic body has already converted one electric crematorium to CNG—based crematorium while conversion process is on in another and will be taken up in two more units.
He said the civic body has also invited Expressions of Interest from NGOs, self-help groups and other such organisations operating in Delhi for adoption, development and maintenance of Nigam Bodh Ghat cremation ground, CNG crematorium in MCD’s Civil Lines Zone and Sant Nagar cremation ground in Karol Bagh Zone.
The cremation grounds were already being maintained by NGOs but some of them have left the project, prompting the MCD to invite fresh EoIs.
“The maintenance of cremation grounds requires a spirit of service. The NGOs will require to have that ability apart from the resources to undertake management of day-to-day activities and maintenance of the cremation ground effectively,” officials said.
The MCD has 63 cremation grounds in areas under its jurisdiction.
