A 75-year-old woman and her five-year-old granddaughter were killed when a fire broke out at their residence in Sadar Bazar area on Saturday morning. Five other members of the family were injured too.

Bhagwati Devi and her granddaughter Kavya lost their lives while Devi’s sons Devraj, 58, and Vijay, 30, her daughter-in-law Sushila, 50, and Preeti, 30, and her Kavya’s sister Vanshika, 8, are undergoing treatment.

According to a fire official, the incident was reported at 8.55 a.m. from House No. 173 in Gali Pahiya Waali in Teliwada. “The fire started on the first floor of the two-storey house and spread further. Many of the family members were sleeping at the time. Prima facie, the cause of fire is gas leak,” he said.

Locals failed to douse the blaze. Eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot which managed to douse the blaze by 9.20 a.m. “The members were taken to a hospital where Bhagwati Devi was declared brought dead and Kavya died during treatment,” said a senior police officer.

The police said that other members are undergoing treatment.
