Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday announced that the State Government would shortly construct a memorial for farmer Gajendra Singh, who died at a rally of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party here on April 22, and give a job to a member of his family.

Addressing a gathering of peasants and villagers at Bawana in Outer Delhi, Mr. Kejriwal said the farmer from Dausa district of Rajasthan had “sacrificed his life”, prompting the Centre and the State Governments to give due consideration to the issues confronting agriculturists.

Mr. Kejriwal distributed compensation cheques to farmers whose crops were destroyed during the recent unseasonal rains. The relief scheme has been named after the deceased farmer — Gajendra Singh Kisan Sahayata Yojana.

The farmers in the rural areas of Delhi whose complete crop has been destroyed are being paid Rs.20,000 per acre of land. In cases where the crop loss has been assessed below 70 per cent, the peasants will get a minimum compensation of Rs.14,000 per acre.
