As it awaits clarification on the mandatory installation of speed governors on commercial vehicles from the Centre, the Delhi Transport Department has instituted an interim arrangement to grant fitness certificates to commercial vehicles till the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) replies.
The department had, last week, sought clarification from the ministry on whether it would allow lead time in relation to its decision to make the installation of speed governors on commercial vehicles mandatory in the wake of protests by taxi and driver unions over the issue.
“The department is still awaiting a reply from the ministry since the policy is perfectly clear in mandating the installation of such devices on new vehicles being registered after May 1,” said the official.
“In the interim, we are granting fitness certificates to such vehicles so that livelihoods do not suffer,” the official added.
Multiple unions representing city drivers have opposed the Delhi government’s decision in this regard, which followed a directive from the ministry deeming it a necessary measure to reduce road accidents by limiting the maximum speed of commercial vehicles to 80 kmph.
