The South Delhi Police have recovered gold worth over Rs.2 crore from a gang of robbers, who used to trap jewellers by puncturing their vehicles at traffic signals.

With this recovery, the Special Staff of South Delhi have solved the theft case of 8 kg of gold from a jeweller in Seelampur on September 16 this year.

According to the police, six persons, including two juveniles, have been apprehended in connection with the case.

“A jeweller reported a theft of gold bars weighing 8 kg from his vehicle when he and his servant Sanjeev were on their way to Chandni Chowk on September 16. He was coming to Delhi from Muzaffarnagar to exchange the gold bars when the theft took place,” said a police officer.

“The complainant had kept the bag containing gold bars under the rear seat. When they reached near Welcome Flyover, one tempo driver told them that one of the tyres of his car was punctured. The occupants came out of the car to check the tyre and later parked it on the roadside near Double Storey, Seelampur, to replace the tyre. Later they realised that the bag containing gold bars was missing,” said the officer.

A case was then registered at Seelampur police station. Special Staff of South Delhi also assisted the local police in the case. During investigation, STF established that the suspects were members of a tyre-puncture gang.

On Thursday night, two days after the theft, they received a tip-off about the movement of one of the accused. A trap was laid near Baba Gangnath Mandir, Nelson Mandela Road and three of the accused were arrested. The stolen gold was also recovered from their possession.

Others were later arrested on their instance.

According to the police, this is so far the biggest recovery from the tyre-puncture gang.
