The octogenarian woman, also a former journalist, who was found murdered at her residence in Greater Kailash here on Monday night actively participated in the development works of her society. Though she spent a major part of her life as a home-maker, the limited time she worked as a journalist instilled in her a desire to help people.

The 82-year-old used to maintain a check-list in which she noted the names of people she had to help and tasks she needed to complete.

The Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA) president of the locality where the victim lived, Ashok Bagga, told The Hindu that she used to take keen interest in the various development works. Recently her main concern was to address the absence of water meters in her building and the sewage problem, which compounded during the monsoon and due to which waste water used to collect in the building’s basement.

“I will try my best to work on issues she raised with me. This was her last wish and fulfilling it will be a way of paying her a tribute,” said Mr. Bagga.

The victim, wife of a well-known journalist, was also trained in classical music and had expressed a desire to sing at her grandson’s wedding, which was just a few months away.

Talking about the sexual assault on the victim, her daughter and son-in-law said they could not believe initially that the domestic help, Neeraj, could do something like that as he had been working there for over a year and had won their trust.

“My mother never complained anything regarding Neeraj’s behaviour to us. I also never found his behaviour suspicious. He was very cooperative and was working there for more than a year, I never expected such a thing would happen,” said the victim’s daughter.

Meanwhile, Neeraj has confessed that he sexually assaulted the elderly woman before killing her. He was produced before a local court on Wednesday where he made the confession.

According to sources, Neeraj in his statement said he watched a pornographic clip before attempting to assault the victim. During the assault, she became unconscious and he assumed that she was dead. That is when he strangulated her and set her on fire.

Sources added that during questioning Neeraj kept changing his statements. Initially he told them that he wanted money and later he cooked up some other story before finally confessing to having sexually assaulted his employer.
