In their postcards to Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung, a number of students of a Hindi-medium government school at Holambi Kalan in Narela have complained about rampant eve-teasing by boys and men who “wait around” their school.
The girls claimed they feel “harassed and threatened by the boys and men standing outside the school and passing lewd remarks.”
“There is a sense of insecurity and even fear when we step outside the school. We come here to better our future, to spend time with our friends and enjoy this phase of our life. We don’t want to be continuously harassed by a bunch of men who think that commenting on us and stalking us is a fun pastime,” said a student from the school.
The students posted their letters to the L-G earlier this week and are now eagerly awaiting his response. The students have also urged Dr. Jung to “urgently consider shifting the medium of education to English in their school”. The demand has come at a time when a heated debate is going on over the alleged move to make Hindi the official language of communication and correspondence within the government.
In her postcard, Laxmi, a student, noted: “We need a science lab in the school to ensure that we are aware of major developments in the area. However, the bigger problem is that we are still using Hindi as the medium of education. This needs to change. Hindi doesn’t have much value in the global market and we stand on a very weak footing because of the medium of education that we receive.”
“My friends and I feel that English should the medium of instruction so that we are able to utilise the education we are getting,” she added in her appeal.
