A gangster wanted for the past 13 years was arrested following a brief shoot-out in Seemapuri on Tuesday night, the police said on Wednesday.
A Special Cell team arrested Hariom Jat around 9.15 p.m. on Tuesday following a tip off, they added.
“We have also seized a pistol of 7.65 bore made in the United States and three live cartridges from the accused,” said Special Cell Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Pramod Kushwaha.
Crimes continued
He added that Hariom was released on bail in 2005 but continued to commit crimes. The 53-year-old gangster, a resident of Shahdara, has studied till Class XII. His father, who was in the Delhi Police, opted for voluntary retirement after 10 years and started a publication business. He published crime stories from courts.
Hariom was arrested from Anand Vihar in 2006 for attempting to kill his old rival and neighbour Pappu Jat. A pistol was also seized. Pappu allegedly wanted Hariom to marry his niece in 1982 but he refused. This led to a rivalry between them. Pappu was released on bail in 2009 and Hariom tried to kill once again.
Hariom attacked Shahdara resident Vinod Gupta in revenge in 2016 for registering a case of attempt to murder against his brother Narinder Pal, who was accused of killing a man. Mr. Gupta was a witness in the case.
Hariom fled after attacking Mr. Gupta and the police declared a bounty of ₹1 lakh on his head, said Mr. Kushwaha.
The police intensified their efforts to trace and and conducted several raids in Aligarh and Bhiwadi to arrest Hariom. They finally nabbed him following a tip-off that he would be in Delhi to kill someone.
