In two separate cases reported from north Delhi in a span of few hours, a gang impersonating Delhi Police personnel and Central Bureau of Investigation officials respectively conned two persons on July 15, said the police.

The police said they are suspected members of the Irani gang, which is an accused in many such incidents.

₹10,000 snatched

In the first case, a businessman was duped of ₹10,000 at Lahori Gate by men posing as Delhi Police personnel.

The victim was stopped on the pretext of security check ahead of Independence Day by one of the accused. He took victim Manoj Kumar to his accomplice, who was sitting on a bike and claimed to be a senior police officer.

When Mr. Kumar asked for their identity cards, the ‘senior officer’ allegedly punched him and took the money from his pocket and bag.

The accused tried to flee on their bike but a cart blocked their way. They were caught and handed over to the Lahori Gate police.

₹5 lakh stolen

In a similar case, a gang impersonating CBI officials cheated a cashier with a private firm carrying ₹5 lakh at Kashmere Gate bus station.

The victim, who was travelling in an auto-rickshaw, was allegedly near Novelty Cinema when two men shouted at him to stop the auto.

One of them told him that they were from the CBI and had confirmed information that he was involved in drug smuggling.

‘Drug peddler’

Shailesh Kumar, who works with a private firm, said the money belonged to his employer and he had to make a payment in Kanpur. However, the accused said they had confirmed information that he was a drug peddler and started frisking him. Mr. Kumar allegedly told the men that the money was in the jacket he was wearing, he told the police.

They asked him to hand over the jacket as they want to verify his claims and started counting the cash.

Meanwhile, two more men on a motorcycle reached the spot and engaged him in a conversation. After five minutes, they returned the jacket and asked him to leave the spot immediately if he did not wish to be arrested.

Mr. Kumar went to his office and found the cash missing. He reported the matter to the police, who are now looking for suspects and verifying his claims.
