The Delhi Police claim to have busted an inter-State gang of highway robbers by arresting five persons from north west Delhi’s Rohini on Monday morning.

The gang members were also accused in a murder case registered with Sahibabad police station, said the police.

The accused has been identified as Bittu alias Anna, Bittu alias Rakesh, Arjun Singh, Sandeep and Sunita alias Maya.

The gang called ‘Anna’ used to rob passers-by after offering them a lift, the police said adding that the gang had a female member and a physically disabled male member to gain the trust of the travellers.

“The gang used to offer lifts to the persons and then take them to isolated roads for the crime. They were active near inter-State bus terminals and railway stations. They had also killed a passenger during the robbery and disposed of his body in Sahibabad to avoid detection,” said Alok Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch.

Anna, Arjun and Sandeep have confessed to killing a man and disposing of his body in adjoining Sahibabad area in Ghaziabad, the police said.

During interrogation, the accused revealed that they had offered a lift to the victim from Anand Vihar ISBT to Mayur Vihar but changed their route to Sahibabad.

“In this case, they had killed the man because he tried to resist the robbery. They had thrown him out of the car,” added Mr. Kumar.

Modus operandi

Explaining their modus operandi, the police said that after the victims boarded the car, the dacoits used to take away their money and forced them to disclose the ATM pin.

Following this, they dropped the passengers in isolated spots and sped off.

The gang was busted after the crime branch received a tip-off about Sandeep’s whereabouts.

A raid was conducted in the Avantika area of Rohini from where he was arrested. After his interrogation, the police team raided the Sultanpuri area and nabbed three other accused.

Items recovered

A car, a scooter and a mobile phone were recovered from the accused, he added.
