A dismissed Tihar Central Jail warder and his three accomplices have been arrested by the South Delhi police for allegedly posing as policemen and robbing businessmen dealing in hawala money.
According to the police, the gang is involved in more than 15 cases of kidnapping, robbery, snatching and under the Arms Act mostly in North Delhi, North-West Delhi and Outer Delhi.
In view of a series of incidents in which criminals posing as policemen went about robbing businessmen, a police team under the supervision of senior officers activated their sources and arrested the gang. The four accused – identified by the police as Mukesh, Sandeep, Nayeemuddin and Jagjit — had assembled near a post office in Jor Bagh and were allegedly planning to target a businessman on his way to Lajpat Nagar in his car on Friday when the police reached the spot following a tip-off. A Wagon-R car, two motorcycles, three pistols, live cartridges and a knife were allegedly seized.
It was purportedly revealed during interrogation that the gang members, posing as policemen, had robbed a Model Town businessman of Rs.35 lakh near Civil Lines on Ring Road two years ago. The robbers were allegedly tipped off by the businessman’s driver and accountant about the movement of cash.
In another incident, the gang allegedly waylaid a businessman on Pul Mithai in Old Delhi and allegedly robbed Rs.15 lakh.
On July 31, the gang intercepted a businessman in a Honda Jazz on his way to Ghaziabad and allegedly robbed him of Rs.1.67 lakh. A case has been registered at the Darya Ganj police station in Central Delhi.
The gang mostly targeted businessmen dealing in hawala money as the victims were reluctant to report the matter to the police. According to the police, the gang had won over a few drivers and accountants employed by such businessmen and used to be tipped off about the movement of cash by them.
Sandeep, the alleged gang leader, was earlier a constable at Tihar Central Jail.
