The Delhi Police Crime Branch claims to have smashed an alleged gang of snatchers involved in more than 300 cases of daylight robberies and snatching with the arrest of two gang members, including the leader.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav said the bike-borne gang members even opened fired at the victims and the police in some instances.
The police received a tip-off on February 5 that two gang members would come near a nursing home in Shahdara. Arrested on arrival, they were identified as Samir Khan (34) and Mohammad Salman (24).
During interrogation it was purportedly disclosed that Samir was the gang leader and involved in more than 30 cases of murder, robbery, snatching, attempt to murder, extortion and assault on policemen. It is also alleged that the gang members used new motorcycles every two-three months in order to dodge police surveillance and prevent identification. Salman’s driving skills, good knowledge of the geography of the Capital and the areas around it also helped.
“The gang members would consume drugs before going on a crime spree. They also did not hesitate to fire at their victims or the police in the face of the slightest of resistance,” Mr. Yadav added.
Investigations are on to capture other accomplices. More arrests are likely to be made, the police said.
